Let’s work on your career together!

fully-customized, One-on-one mentorship sessions in english or italian

After teaching teaching lettering workshops to over 250 designers, given talks at conferences around the US and internationally, and guest-lecturing at design schools like SVA, Pratt, and Parsons, I’m excited to offer one-on-one mentorship sessions to help you not only improve your lettering, but also reach your career goals!

WHY one-on-one?

Have you ever taken an online class only to realize that you either fell off the wagon halfway through or didn’t really learn as much as you’d hoped? That’s because, for most of us, personalized, live feedback and one-on-one interactions between teacher and student are the most powerful part of a class. Unfortunately, it’s very hard to get that level of attention with online learning, unless it’s a private session. Private mentorship is the closest experience to a live workshop you can have online, and therefore one the fastest and most effective way to reach your goal.

Nick could see nuances that I inherently knew needing fixing, despite not being exactly sure how to get there. His technical comments streamlined everything I had been fiddling with for too long with so much ease and precision. It gave the project that last push, allowing me to feel confident passing it along to the client as "final," while giving me the confidence that I had achieved what I intended.

What we can talk about?

Our session will be completely tailored to what will most benefit you and your career! General topics can include:

  • Your vision for your career, regardless of when you got into lettering/design

  • Running a small design business (invoicing, keeping track of projects)

  • Going freelance and perhaps getting an agent

  • Pricing and licensing your work

  • Curating a strong portfolio or Instagram account to get more of the work you wan to do

  • Starting a successful passion project, like I did with Fauxsaics.

We can also get very specific and discuss a particular project you’re working on, I’ll give you practical, detailed feedback to improve the typography and lettering of your piece and the resources to help you push it farther.

As you can see, lettering suggestions and tips are hyper-personalized and can get very, very specific. Design by Samir Naimi

I honestly felt so inspired after talking with Nick. He is incredibly articulate and thoughtful and found patterns in my work that I couldn't see. He immediately identified the strongest pieces and showed me how my message was getting muddled by the way I was presenting my work. He helped me strengthen and clarify my social presence, and within a few weeks my freelance requests skyrocketed. It gave me a ton of confidence and much clearer focus on the path I want to take. I can't recommend Nick enough, as an artist, a mentor, and a person.

OTHER FAQs

How much does it cost? Sessions cost $75 and last around 50 minutes.

What if I can’t afford it? If you really want to have a session with me, but are financially unable, I encourage you to apply for my scholarship program (coming soon)! For every 10 paid sessions I teach, I’ll give a free session to someone randomly chosen from my scholarship list. More info below.

Do you offer a student rate? If you’re a current student, email me (ideally from your .edu account) to discuss options. I do have limited slots available at a reduced student rate.

Do you offer sessions only in English? I also offer sessions in Italian (mandami una mail per saperne di più) and French (au cas par cas — envoyez-moi un email pour en savoir plus).

How do I book a session? Once you click on any of the “book a session” buttons (or right here), you’ll be taken to my schedule where you can find and purchase a slot that works for you. When the time of your session comes around, log into Skype and I’ll call you!

How can I make the most of my session? Think about what you’d like to talk about beforehand and write down any questions you might have for me, so you can be as prepared as possible when your session starts. If you’d like me to give you feedback on a specific project or your portfolio, you can email me a link or pdf a couple days before, so we spend less time during your sessions getting files to me. Also, once you book your sessions, you’ll be taken to a page with several questions to get you thinking about your goals and career.

What if I’m not happy with my session? My first priority is that these sessions are as useful as possible to you and your career. If you are not happy with your session, I’ll give you a full refund! Just email me about it within one week after the date of your session.

What happens if I need to reschedule? No problem! Just send me an email as soon as you realize you won’t be able to make your session and we can easily reschedule it to a new date that works for both of us.

What if I don’t have Skype? Skype is free, super easy to use and can be downloaded here. If you are not comfortable downloading Skype, email me and we can discuss alternatives, like talking on the phone or FaceTime.

What if I still have a question? Don’t hesitate email me with any additional questions!

Don’t you think you’ve put enough “book a session” buttons on this page? Not sure… so I’ll add another just for good measure:

🖤 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM 🖤

For every ten paid sessions I teach, I give one free session to someone who can’t afford it, so by booking a session, you’re also helping me support other letterers and designers who don’t have as much access to professional development opportunities.

Please note that the scholarship program is not up and running yet. Check back soon, sign up for my email list, or email me.
